I’m supporting Harris-Walz for, believe it or not, some of the same fundamental reasons I was and am proud to have worked for Mitt Romney - decency, competence, and the belief that patriotism comes down to always working toward a more perfect union.
The things that I thought made the Republican Party a useful counterbalance in American politics - being willing to ask how we’ll pay for well-intentioned programs, recognition that lasting change often requires time and compromise, and a fundamental belief that keeping the American military the most lethal fighting force in the history of the world is the best way to make sure we don’t have to use it - are now better represented by the Democratic ticket than the Republican one. As my former boss has often said, we can survive bad policy but we can’t survive bad character.
I’m voting for the chance at continuing to perfect our union.
The response of Trump’s allies to the 250+ Bush-McCain-Romney alumni who endorsed Harris-Walz were to belittle and dismiss. The truth is that they are your friends, your neighbors, the people whose children play soccer with your children. They have real, everyday concerns like you about the future of the country and who will lead it. They’ve worked at the highest levels of government and Republican politics and want you to know that Donald Trump does not represent the ideals they fought for throughout their lives.
They each believe a new direction for our country begins with Kamala Harris and Tim Walz.
