An open letter from a George W. Bush alum to George W. Bush voters
Why you should support Harris-Walz in 2024
“I want to change the tone of Washington to one of civility and respect.” - George W. Bush’s acceptance speech to the Republican National Convention, August 3, 2000
Those of us who worked for President Bush came to our nation’s capital 24 years ago united in purpose and vision. Bush called on us to serve something higher than ourselves: our country. Proudly working side-by-side in the White House with Democrats, hoping to create a kinder and gentler America. A conservatism that drew on America’s best traditions and compassion for her people. President Bush sought to be the great uniter, a leader with clear convictions, and a passionate promoter and defender of freedom and human dignity.
Standing on the Ellipse on Tuesday night, Vice President Kamala Harris evoked a similar call for civility and respect:
I’ve lived the promise of America. And I see the promise of America in all of you... I’ve seen it in Americans different in many respects, but united in our pursuit of freedom, our belief in fairness and decency, and our faith in a better future. America, I know the vast majority of us have so much more in common than what separates us.
This is the spirit of America. This is the heart of freedom that beats and echoes from the battlefields of Gettysburg to the streets of Selma. She requires a selfless leader who inspires others not just through strength, but also through empathy and listening to those who disagree. The American presidency is too hallowed for vanity or ego. It is an immense and serious burden with enormous responsibility for our safety, security, and economic prosperity. The presidency demands nothing less than patience, duty, and honor.
Donald Trump is our era’s great divider. He has passion only for himself, his only convictions in a New York court. He regularly calls our fellow Americans the “enemy within,” “lunatics,” “scum,” “vermin,” “animals,” and worse simply because they dare to disagree with him. For Trump, the duties of the presidency and service to the American people are distractions from seeking vengeance on his fellow Americans.
During their years of service, Bush and Harris have sought to protect all Americans; Trump first asks if the victims wear a red hat. Bush and Harris have attended countless funerals of Americans who made the ultimate sacrifice; Trump called them suckers and asked what’s “in it for them?” Bush and Harris promised to listen to others; Trump believes he has all the answers.
Simply put, we deserve better than Donald Trump. Kamala Harris is the only choice for president who embodies America’s best traditions and compassion for her people.
"I don't believe people who disagree with me are the enemy," Vice President Harris told the crowd on Tuesday. "He wants to put them in jail. I'll give them a seat at the table.”
Even if we do not agree with Vice President Harris on every issue, all Americans will have a seat at her table when she becomes president on January 20, 2025.
