In 2017, John McCain wrote, “Our shared values define us more than our differences. And acknowledging those shared values can see us through our challenges today if we have the wisdom to trust in them again.” That optimism and belief that those with different political views are worthy of respect is a voice that is sorely missing from today’s political discourse.
I am speaking out to show Republicans, former Republicans, and independent voters that even if you don’t agree with Kamala Harris on all of the issues, we can all stand united and vote for a leader who has a positive vision for America. Over 200 of us proudly worked for Republican standard-bearers over the years, and we know how important it is to honor the sacred trust our nation entrusts to the President of the United States. Simply put, Donald Trump has time and again proven he is not worthy of that trust, which is why Republican leaders like Dick Cheney and even members of Donald Trump’s cabinet have endorsed Kamala Harris.
I was proud to work for John McCain because he devoted his life and career to serving America, exemplified by his 2008 campaign slogan “Country First.” He believed strongly that America’s best days lie ahead and that “nothing brings greater happiness in life than to serve a cause greater than yourself” as he said in his 2008 acceptance speech.
The concept of serving a cause greater than one’s self is an anathema to Donald Trump, and his ongoing focus on his grievances and self-aggrandizement stands in stark contrast to all that John McCain represented during his lifetime of service.
The core of Donald Trump’s message has been defined by the “again” in his slogan “Make America Great Again.” Its central premise is inherently backward-looking.
By contrast, during his concession speech in 2008, John McCain urged us, “...to not despair of our present difficulties but to believe always in the promise and greatness of America, because nothing is inevitable here.” I am not just opposing Donald Trump, but actively encouraging my friends to vote for Kamala Harris because I believe, as John McCain did, that greatness lies ahead of us. Nothing is inevitable here because millions of us believe in the central tenets of America: Freedom. Democracy. Rule of law.
Kamala Harris offers an optimistic, forward-looking vision for America, and I am proud to join over 200 friends and colleagues in endorsing her to be the next President of the United States.
